Brilliant Trails improves Visitor Experience at Broadwaters Mill Park
Good interpretation begins long before the first panel is designed.
The Broadwaters Mill Park interpretation panels were designed to consider how people arrive at a site, where they naturally walk, what they are likely to notice and where interpretation can add something meaningful to their visit.
Rather than filling a park with unnecessary signage, our aim is to place information where it has the greatest impact. Each panel should have a purpose – whether that’s introducing a story, explaining an important feature, highlighting local wildlife or simply encouraging visitors to stop and look a little closer.
This approach allows interpretation to complement the landscape rather than compete with it.
Designing and Installing park Interpretation Panels That Tell a Story
The new interpretation panels, Brilliant Trails designed and installed, were designed to transform information about the Broadwaters Mill Park into engaging, accessible content.
Our in-house team brings together content writing, graphic design and illustration to create panels that are visually appealing and easy to understand. Strong headings, concise copy, imagery and illustrations help visitors quickly engage with the information, while additional details give those who want to learn more the opportunity to delve deeper.
The result is interpretation that works for different audiences, from families and local residents to schools, walking groups and tourists discovering the park for the first time.
Importantly, every panel is designed specifically for its location. The content visitors are reading relates directly to the landscape, feature or story they can see around them, helping create a stronger connection between interpretation and place.
A Trailhead That Sets the Scene
The trailhead provides an important starting point for the experience.
It welcomes visitors, introduces the park and gives them the information they need before setting off. Clear orientation, route information and key points of interest help visitors understand where they are and what they can discover.
By combining practical information with strong visual design, the trailhead becomes much more than a large sign. It sets the tone for the wider visitor experience and creates a clear identity that can be carried through the rest of the park signage.
Drawing a Brand-New Illustrated Park Map
One of the key elements of the project was creating a completely new bespoke illustrated map of the park.
Rather than relying on a generic mapping style, our in-house designers drew the map specifically for the site. Paths, landscape features, facilities, entrances and important points of interest could all be considered individually, allowing us to determine what visitors genuinely need to see.
This is particularly important in parks and outdoor attractions, where conventional maps can sometimes include too much information or fail to communicate how a place actually feels on the ground.
Our illustrated approach simplifies the landscape without losing its character.
Recognisable features can be highlighted, routes made clearer and important visitor facilities identified using easy-to-understand symbols. The result is a map that doesn’t simply show visitors where they are – it helps them understand the park.
Creating One Consistent Visitor Experience
Designing the map, trailhead and interpretation panels together allowed us to create a consistent visual language across the entire project.
Typography, illustrations, colours, icons and mapping styles can all work together, making the signage feel like part of one coordinated experience rather than a collection of individual panels added over time.
For visitors, that consistency makes information easier to recognise and navigate. For Broadwaters Mill Park, it creates a stronger and more professional identity.
