Creating The Apley Farm Shop Nature Trail with Brilliant Trails

When Apley Farm Shop wanted to enhance its existing nature trail and create even more reasons for families to explore the wider site, Brilliant Trails was delighted to help bring the experience to life.

The project combined storytelling, bespoke illustration, interactive trail markers, printed activities, a web-based trail experience and handcrafted wooden sculptures to create an adventure that extends the visitor experience beyond the farm shop.

Importantly, we also designed the trail with the future in mind. Rather than creating a one-off attraction, the new infrastructure allows Apley Farm Shop to regularly refresh the experience with new stories and seasonal adventures throughout the year.

12 Interactive Trail Stops to Discover

Along the route, Brilliant Trails designed, manufactured and installed 12 interactive trail markers at carefully selected locations.

Each marker reveals another part of the story and introduces a question, clue or activity for visitors to complete before moving on.

Children are encouraged to observe their surroundings, engage with the story and interact with the natural environment rather than simply walking from one marker to another.

Families can complete the adventure using an A3 double-sided activity worksheet, recording their answers and collecting clues along the route to reveal the final code word.

Combining physical discovery with puzzles and challenges creates a simple, accessible activity that families can enjoy together while encouraging them to explore more of the site.

One Trail System, Endless Possibilities

One of the most important elements of the project was creating a trail that wouldn’t be limited to a single story or season.

Brilliant Trails installed our flexible angled-post trail system along the route. The posts remain permanently in position, while the individual marker panels are securely fixed using screws and can be removed and replaced when required.

This gives Apley Farm Shop a ready-made trail infrastructure that can be refreshed without having to replace the entire installation.

The nature trail could become an Easter challenge in spring, a summer nature adventure, a Halloween trail in autumn or a magical Christmas experience in winter.

New stories, illustrations, activities and challenges can be introduced while the main trail infrastructure remains in place.

For visitor attractions, farms and rural businesses, this approach can significantly extend the value of an initial trail investment. Instead of creating one attraction, the site gains a flexible platform for seasonal events, repeat visits and year-round visitor engagement.

Bespoke Sculptures Bring the Trail to Life

Signage was only one part of the transformation.

Our specialist chainsaw carvers created a collection of bespoke wooden wildlife sculptures for visitors to discover around the trail, including an owl, fox and badger.

These handcrafted features create memorable moments along the route and help connect the characters and storytelling with the woodland environment around them.

They also add another dimension to the visitor experience. Children aren’t simply reading about woodland wildlife – they are discovering larger-than-life characters within the landscape itself.

One of the standout features created for the project was a bespoke outdoor fairy classroom. Complete with a carved wooden blackboard and mushroom seating, the classroom transforms part of the woodland into an imaginative outdoor learning space.

It provides somewhere for children to sit, talk, learn and play while surrounded by nature, while also creating a distinctive feature that families will remember long after their visit.

More Than a Trip to the Farm Shop

The completed Apley Farm Shop Nature Trail adds another dimension to a family day out.

By encouraging visitors to explore beyond the main farm shop, the trail helps increase dwell time, engagement and movement around the wider site, while providing an additional activity for families to enjoy during their visit.

Most importantly, the project has been designed to keep evolving.

From the first story and character sketch through to graphic design, trail signage, printed activities, digital interaction, sculpture and installation, our team was able to create a cohesive experience specifically for Apley Farm Shop and its visitors.

The result is a nature trail built not just for today, but for many adventures still to come.
