Seasonal trail design for English Heritage: enhancing visitor experiences across the UK
Over the past year, Brilliant Trails has partnered with English Heritage to design and deliver a series of seasonal trails across 23 of their landmark sites. From Belay Hall to Walmer Castle and Audley End, each trail was carefully crafted to enrich the visitor experience while giving families new reasons to explore these iconic landscapes.
English Heritage wanted a flexible way to keep its visitor offer fresh throughout the year. Working together, we developed a suite of seasonal trails that encouraged families to step outdoors, discover more of the grounds and learn something new at every stop.
A standout project was the Christmas trail, designed as a fun and educational experience that shared fascinating stories behind festive traditions.
Visitors uncovered:
- The Story of the Nutcracker
- How the first Christmas card was created
- The evolution of Father Christmas
- The origins of familiar holiday customs
Using a custom workbook, families answered questions, completed activities and followed a themed journey that blended storytelling with outdoor exploration.
Seasonal trails that increase engagement and repeat visits
By updating their trails throughout the year, English Heritage saw clear benefits:
- Increased visitor dwell time
- Higher engagement during peak seasons
- More families exploring the outdoors
- Repeat visits to discover new seasonal themes
Seasonal trail design is an effective and affordable way to keep visitor experiences fresh, exciting and continually evolving.
Temporary trails that protect sensitive heritage landscapes
Many English Heritage sites are historically and archaeologically significant. Because of this, it was important to guide visitors around the grounds in a way that enhanced the experience without permanently altering the environment.
Temporary foamex panels provided the ideal solution.
These lightweight, removable installations:
- avoid ground disturbance
- comply with conservation and preservation requirements
- allow full trails to be installed and removed within days
- let heritage organisations test-trial concepts before committing to permanent structures
This approach ensured visitors could enjoy a fully guided experience while the historic landscape remained protected and undisturbed.
A flexible trail system that adapts all year round
Alongside temporary solutions, our permanent modular systems make it easy for attractions to swap content throughout the year. Whether it’s Christmas, Halloween, spring wildlife, or summer adventures, new themes can be introduced simply by switching out panel artwork.
This keeps the trail dynamic, relevant and consistently engaging for visitors.
