We use Quick Reaction (QR) codes frequently in trail design as they are a good way of generating direct links to web pages, mapping or social media sites. We have also developed trails with Near Field Commendation (NFC ) to enhance this experience. With NFC stickers attached to locations, information signage or even a window, sites of interest can be regularly updated by you.
The NFC information is the same as a QR code but has the ability to store more information and interact with the user’s phone, e.g. log into a Wi-Fi hotspot.
Augmented Reality (AR) has become a great platform for the visitor to gain even more information, by means of experiencing video and audio content directly onto their smart devices. It provides a live direct or indirect view of a physical, real-world environment whose elements are supplemented by computer-generated sensory input such as sound, video, graphics or GPS data. We see this as a fully interactive way to give the visitor the story in a way other than words and still images.
AR requires a mobile or Wi-Fi connection to work correctly, unlike QR and NFC which can provide information directly onto the phone without any signal. AR can be integrated into any mobile application and the content can be designed on any subject from 3D modelling of myths and legend creatures to a simple audio or video presentation.
We are using IBeacon to implement triggers into our newest trails. IBeacon is the name for Apple’s technology standard, which allows Mobile Apps (running on both iOS and Android devices) to listen for signals from beacons in the physical world and react accordingly. Apple also refers to it generally as location and proximity detection technology. Each trail can be used for specific subjects based around the school curriculum with additional questions and tasks for your pupils to complete.
